The artists role is to be more of a mirror than a loud speaker.

Before we choose to add anything something has already shaped us.  It sits quietly in the background and without us knowing, it changes who we are. I stretch and embroider my identity and experience of history into objects and images. I don’t attempt to give answers, but rather I try to pull on a thread and have the viewer unravel.

Ruth was born in a small town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.  She was a young girl when Apartheid ended and watched a country change its identity and rewrite its history.  She has an undergraduate degree in Fine Art from Stellenbosch University; a PgDip Fine Art from Byam Shaw, Central St Martins; and a Masters of Fine Art  (cum laude) from City and Guilds of London Art School.

She now lives and works in South London with her husband and two children.

Ruth’s work deals with themes of identity and history.  She examines how art can be a means to visualise and process our life experiences.  She does this in a variety of media, allowing the materials to add meaning to the artworks.
